The Center for Arts in Natick, commonly referred to as TCAN, is a prominent community arts organization located in Natick, Massachusetts, USA. Established in 1997, TCAN serves the MetroWest Boston area, offering a diverse array of cultural services. Annually, it hosts over 300 events, classes, and performances, attracting more than 30,000 patrons.

TCAN’s inception dates back to 1997 when founding director Michael Moran envisioned a coffeehouse-style venue in Natick Center. This venue was intended to be a hub for cultural and social interaction, as well as an informal club for artists and community members. Initially, TCAN operated out of a small storefront on Main Street with a seating capacity of 60. It became known for hosting open mic nights for local songwriters, jazz jams, small community theater productions, and visual art exhibits by local artists.

The success of TCAN at its original location led to the pursuit of a larger, more permanent facility. In October 1998, TCAN acquired the historic Central Fire Station from the Town of Natick. This building, constructed in 1875, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A $2.5 million renovation transformed the space, including the installation of a steel beam to support a 4,000 sq. ft. performance area, restoration of the historic cupola, and the return of the original four arched bay entrances. The new facility, with a seating capacity of 270, opened in May 2003.

TCAN is supported by a dedicated team of over 240 volunteers who assist in event production, box office operations, and various marketing and fundraising activities. In 2004, David Lavalley was appointed as the new executive director, succeeding Michael Moran. This change was met with some local controversy and the departure of certain volunteers.

TCAN offers a wide range of programming, from concerts featuring nationally known touring musicians to local performers, theater, comedy, arts education classes, and family programs. In 2016, the TCAN Screening Room, a 120-seat digital cinema venue, was added, providing screenings of classic films and new releases. The organization also hosts the TCAN Players, a community theater troupe that presents three productions annually.

Strategic partnerships have been key to TCAN’s growth and sustainability. Collaborations with institutions like the Danforth Museum and Walnut Hill School have enhanced program offerings and expanded audience reach. TCAN also partners with local organizations to provide free access to its programming for economically disadvantaged individuals and families.
