The History and Features of the Miniscule of Sound
The Miniscule of Sound is renowned as “The World’s Smallest Niteclub,” a performance art piece that emerged in 1998 in Hackney, Greater London. Conceived as a parody of the established superclubs, its name cleverly references the famous Ministry of Sound. This playful imitation initially led to the Ministry of Sound considering legal action, but the matter was amicably resolved, as reported by DJ magazines, including an article by Carl Loben for DJ Mag.
The ‘niteclub’ itself is a prefabricated wooden structure, designed to be transported to various venues and set up as a miniature nightclub. Performers take on the roles of staff, acting as DJs, bouncers, bar staff, and cloakroom attendants. In keeping with its parody nature, the bouncers enforce an idiosyncratic and opaque door policy, sometimes refusing entry to visitors. Notably, DJ Fat Boy Slim was denied entry until he submitted a demo tape. The structure occupies an area of 4 feet by 8 feet, with a dance floor measuring 2 square meters.
The Miniscule of Sound’s inaugural performance took place in August 1998 in the changing booth of a disused outdoor swimming pool at London Fields Lido in Hackney. Since then, it has been featured at a variety of events, predominantly music festivals such as the Glastonbury Festival in the UK, Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, and the Big Day Out in Australia. The Miniscule of Sound has operated both independently and as a sideshow at larger events. Initially, it performed at local events in Hackney, growing out of the squat and rave party scene. The originators were active in these subcultures and connected to similar artistic performance groups like the Mutoid Waste Company.
In 2000, the Miniscule of Sound was recognized by Guinness World Records as the “Smallest mobile nightclub,” a title it held until 2010 when the record was surpassed by “Rumors.”
