The History and Features of Nueva Cero

Nueva Cero, formerly known as Paradise, is an LGBT nightclub located in the San Miguel commune of Santiago, Chile. The venue has a rich history, originally housing the San Miguel Theater, which was built in the 1920s at 1204 Euclides Street, previously known as “Central Avenue.” Over the decades, the theater hosted various cultural events and operated as a cinema until the 1980s.

After its closure as a cinema, the venue transformed in 1981 into Sala Lautaro, also known as “Gimnasio Lautaro” or “Sala Euclides.” During the 1980s and early 1990s, it became a hub for concerts by various musical groups, particularly rock bands like Amapola and Tumulto, thrash metal bands such as Massacre and Warpath, and death metal bands including Torturer, Sadism, Death Yell, Darkness, Abhorrent, and Atomic Aggressor. Sala Lautaro closed its doors around September 1991.

In the early 1990s, the venue became the nightclub Paradise, primarily catering to a gay audience with drag queen shows featuring performers like Maureen Junott and Kassandra Romanini. Later, it was operated by Sarquis y Meza Limitada, who founded the nightclub Cero in 1998. Over the years, it evolved into what is now known as Nueva Cero.

Nueva Cero has hosted a variety of shows, including “Reinas de la Noche,” with backstage hosted by Janin Day between 2016 and 2018, and the beauty contest “Miss Nueva Cero.” The venue has also been a site for qualifying events and the final of Mister Gay Chile and has participated in the Santiago LGBT Pride March.
