The History and Character of Toad’s Place

Toad’s Place is a renowned concert venue and nightclub located in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. Established in 1976, it has played a significant role in the revival of the live music scene in New Haven. The building that houses Toad’s Place has a rich history; it was originally the site of the Yale Co-op and later became a popular restaurant known as Hungry Charlie’s in the 1960s, followed by Caleb’s Tavern.

The venue was founded by Mike Spoerndle, who rented the building in 1974 with the vision of creating a nightclub. It opened in March 1975, and Spoerndle named it Toad’s Place, inspired by a childhood joke related to the toads in the hills around Volos, Greece, where he studied music. In 1976, Spoerndle transformed the venue into a live music space, drawing inspiration from the Volos Municipal Theater. His goal was to create a vibrant space for artists in New Haven, and the venue quickly became a hub for live performances by legendary artists such as Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and Koko Taylor.

In 1983, Toad’s Place expanded with a second location in Waterbury, Connecticut, although it only operated for three years. A franchise location opened in Richmond, Virginia, in 2007, featuring a restaurant and club with a capacity for up to 1,500 visitors. However, this location closed on March 9, 2009, with all scheduled shows canceled or moved to another venue in Richmond. There were also plans for a third location in Trenton, New Jersey.

Toad’s Place has left its mark on popular culture as well. Jazz keyboardist Jeff Lorber included an instrumental piece titled “Toad’s Place” on his album ‘Water Sign.’ Additionally, it was at Toad’s Place in 1989 that singer Rob Zombie met his future wife, actress Sheri Moon, through mutual friends. They later married on Halloween in 2002.

Despite its cultural significance, Toad’s Place has faced challenges, particularly with incidents of underage drinking. In September 2002, the venue was fined $25,000 and closed for a week after underage drinkers were found on the premises. In May 2007, following a 2005 inspection that revealed 142 underage drinkers, the venue faced a $90,000 fine and a 90-day closure. It reopened on August 4, 2007, with a concert by Badfish, a Sublime tribute band.
