Bassiani: Tbilisi’s Premier Techno Club

Bassiani is a renowned nightclub located in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Established in 2014, the club is situated within the Dinamo Arena, the city’s largest sports venue. It uniquely utilizes a disused swimming pool as its main dance floor, creating a distinctive atmosphere for its patrons. As the largest techno club in Georgia, Bassiani can accommodate approximately 1,200 people, making it a significant hub for both local and international techno enthusiasts.

The club has gained international recognition not only for its music but also for its strict entry policies. Notably, Bassiani has a controversial policy of denying entry to Russian citizens, which has sparked criticism and discussions about its nationalist stance. Despite this, the club remains a major attraction in Tbilisi, drawing visitors from around the globe who are eager to experience its vibrant techno scene.

On May 12, 2018, Bassiani was the center of a significant incident when it was raided by police, leading to the arrest of its two owners. This event triggered protests, highlighting the club’s role as a cultural and social touchstone in Tbilisi. Inside the club, photography is strictly prohibited, and face control is rigorously enforced to maintain the club’s exclusive atmosphere.

In addition to its main stage, Bassiani features a smaller room known as “Horoom.” This space hosts “Horoom Nights,” a series of LGBTQ parties that further diversify the club’s offerings and underscore its commitment to inclusivity within the techno community.

The name “Bassiani” has historical significance, deriving from the 13th-century Battle of Basian between the Kingdom of Georgia and the Sultanate of Rum. This connection to Georgian history adds a layer of cultural depth to the club’s identity.

As of 2023, Bassiani boasts a roster of 14 resident DJs, including notable names such as Dito, DVS1, Function, and Hector Oaks. These resident artists contribute to the club’s reputation as a leading venue for cutting-edge techno music, ensuring that Bassiani remains at the forefront of the global electronic music scene.
