Overview

Millencolin is a Swedish punk rock band from Örebro. Nikola Šarčević, Mathias Färm, and Erik Ohlsson formed the group on 12 October 1992, and drummer Fredrik Larzon joined in early 1993. The band’s name comes from the “melancholy” skateboarding trick.

Early formation

In the original lineup, Šarčević handled vocals and bass, Ohlsson played guitar, and Färm played drums. The trio released its first demo tape, Goofy, in early 1993. After Larzon joined as drummer, Färm moved to second guitar. The band recorded a second demo, Melack, that summer and sent it to the newly established Burning Heart Records.

First releases and international touring

Burning Heart issued the single Use Your Nose in November 1993. The EP Skauch followed in July 1994, and the band released its first album, Tiny Tunes, later that year. A legal dispute with Warner Brothers over the title and cover artwork led to the album being reissued as Same Old Tunes in 1998.

Millencolin released Life on a Plate in 1995 and began touring outside Scandinavia. Epitaph Records subsequently released the album in the United States. The group toured Japan, Australia, Brazil, and Canada and appeared on the 1997 Warped Tour.

Pennybridge Pioneers and later work

After For Monkeys and the compilation The Melancholy Collection, Millencolin released Pennybridge Pioneers in 2000. The album moved toward a stronger rock influence than the band’s earlier skate punk and ska punk work. Home from Home followed in 2002. In 2003, the Swedish Hit Awards named Millencolin Best Swedish Rock.

The band released Kingwood in March 2005. The album returned to a faster punk rock approach while retaining the rock direction of the preceding records and reached number two on the Swedish album chart. Millencolin began writing and recording Machine 15 in October 2007.

Skateboarding activities

Skateboarding, which brought the members together, remained part of the band’s activities. Millencolin hosted the Millencolin Open at its own skatepark in Örebro. On 8 and 9 June 2012, the group marked its twentieth anniversary with the two-day Millencolin 20 Year Festival at Brunnsparken in Örebro, closing both nights with different career-spanning sets.
