Introduction to the Lyric Theatre (Hammersmith)
The Lyric Theatre, also known as the Lyric Hammersmith, is a nonprofit theatre located on King Street in Hammersmith, Greater London. Originally established as a music hall in 1888 on Bradmore Grove, the venue quickly gained popularity, leading to its reconstruction and expansion in 1890 and again in 1895. The 1895 reopening, under the name The New Lyric Opera House, featured an opening address by the renowned actress Lillie Langtry, marking its significance in the theatrical world.
In 1966, the theatre faced closure and demolition, but a successful campaign to preserve it resulted in the dismantling of the auditorium. It was meticulously reassembled within a modern shell on its current site on King Street, a short distance from its original location. This relocated theatre opened its doors in 1979, continuing its legacy in a new environment.
The Lyric Theatre boasts two main performance spaces: the Main House and the Studio. The Main House is a 565-seat auditorium that retains its 19th-century design, serving as the venue for major productions. The Studio, with its 120 seats, provides a platform for smaller productions by emerging companies, fostering new talent and innovative performances.
A significant redevelopment project was completed in 2015, introducing new facilities for young people and the local community. Designed by Rick Mather Architects, this project was recognized in the ‘community benefit’ and ‘tourism and leisure’ categories at the RICS Awards 2016, London, highlighting its impact and contribution to the community.
The Lyric Theatre’s programming is divided into five strands: Main House, Studio, Music & Comedy, Lyric Children, and Lyric Young Company. In 2011, the theatre received the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre for Sean Holmes’ production of Sarah Kane’s ‘Blasted’. The current artistic director is Rachel O’Riordan, who took over from Sean Holmes in February 2019, with Amy Belson serving as the executive director.
