History and Features of Fabric
Fabric is a renowned nightclub located in Farringdon, Greater London, United Kingdom. It was founded by Keith Reilly and Cameron Leslie and officially opened its doors on October 29, 1999. The club occupies a renovated space of the Metropolitan Cold Stores, directly opposite the historic Smithfield Meat Market. The area, known for its Victorian-era construction, is also home to landmarks such as the Holborn Viaduct and Fleet Valley Bridge.
Fabric is famous for its unique architectural and acoustic design, featuring three separate rooms each equipped with independent sound systems. Two of these rooms include stages for live performances. A standout feature of the club is the “bodysonic” dancefloor in Room One, where sections of the floor are connected to 400 bass transducers that emit the bass frequencies of the music being played, creating a vibrating floor experience.
Musical Influence and Events
Fabric has made a significant impact on the music scene, particularly in the genres it showcases. Friday nights, known as “FABRICLIVE,” are dedicated to bass music genres, primarily focusing on drum and bass. These nights also feature grime, breakbeat, dubstep, and bassline. Saturday nights, simply called “Fabric,” highlight house, techno, and disco genres, with resident DJs like Craig Richards and Terry Francis leading the line-ups. Sundays are promoted under the “Wetyourself” banner, focusing on underground house and techno.
In 2016, Fabric faced a major challenge when it was temporarily closed and its license was revoked by Islington Council following two drug-related deaths at the club. However, a campaign to save the club was launched, gaining support from DJs, musicians, and politicians, including London’s mayor Sadiq Khan. The club was eventually allowed to reopen under stricter conditions, including enhanced security measures and a lifetime ban for anyone caught dealing or possessing illegal drugs.
Other Ventures and Cultural Impact
Beyond its club nights, Fabric has expanded its influence through other ventures. In 2001, it launched a CD series under Fabric Records, alternating monthly between Fabric and FABRICLIVE releases, showcasing both established and emerging DJs. In 2013, Fabric started a record label called Houndstooth. The club has also been featured in popular culture, serving as a filming location for the BBC America series “Killing Eve” and appearing in the music video for Soulwax’s “E Talking.”
