History and Features
The Tank is a nonprofit off-off-Broadway performance venue and producer located in Manhattan, New York. It was founded in May 2003 by a group of eight young artists, primarily graduates from Yale University, Oberlin College, and Harvard University. Their mission was to provide a space for young artists to create work in the heart of New York City. Initially located on 42nd Street, the venue operated on a month-to-month lease due to the landlord’s intention to sell the building. Within ten months, The Tank had repaid its startup loans by presenting a diverse lineup of indie bands, underground films, and performances ranging from comedy to puppetry. The venue’s name originated from its first space’s architecture, initially dubbed “the Fishtank” due to its large windows, which was later shortened to “the Tank.”
Music and Performance
The Tank quickly became a hub for the New York chiptune scene, akin to CBGB’s role in the punk rock and new wave movements. In 2006, it hosted the Blip Festival, a chiptune festival featuring musical performances, workshops, and film screenings, in collaboration with 8bitpeoples. By 2017, The Tank had moved to a new location on 36th Street, featuring a 56-seat black box theater and a 98-seat proscenium theater. This move coincided with the relocations of several other New York City theaters.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, The Tank laid off most of its staff and suspended programming, canceling over 273 performances. Despite these challenges, the theater launched a digital arts livestream called CyberTank. By July 2021, The Tank resumed live in-person programming and opened a new rehearsal space, The Attic, in 2022.
Awards and Recognition
The Tank received an Obie Award in 2020 for its work supporting emerging artists and has been nominated for six Drama Desk Awards. In 2004, The Village Voice named it “Best Broadway theater turned hipster hangout” in its Best of NYC poll. The Tank continues to be recognized as a premier incubator of emerging talent in New York City.
