1. Formation and Members

Autoclave were formed in the summer of 1990 in Washington, D.C. The lineup consisted of Christina Billotte (vocals, bass), Mary Timony (lead guitar), Nikki Chapman (guitar), and Melissa Berkoff (drums).

2. Musical Style and Characteristics

Known for sophisticated songwriting built on complex and shifting time signatures, the band’s sound has been described as an intelligent, off-kilter brand of rock, sometimes discussed in the context of the math rock movement.

3. Discography

The band released the 7″ EP “Go Far” (1991) and the 10″ EP “Autoclave” (1992). A self-titled compilation followed in 1997, after the band had already broken up.

4. Influence on Other Bands and Scenes

After the breakup, Mary Timony went on to form Helium in Boston, while Christina Billotte formed Slant 6 in D.C. — making Autoclave a key node in the 1990s D.C. indie and post-punk scene.

5. Breakup and Reunion

The band broke up in May 1991, and no reunion has been documented since.

6. Current Reputation and Legacy

Despite their brief lifespan, Autoclave remain essential to any account of the 1990s D.C. underground, both as a Dischord-adjacent act and as the root of Slant 6 and Helium.

7. Summary

From their formation in 1990 to their breakup in 1991, Autoclave left a lasting mark on the Washington, D.C. indie scene despite their short time together.
