Introduction to DC9 Nightclub
DC9 Nightclub is a prominent nightclub and restaurant located in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C., United States. Established in 2004, it has become a staple in the indie music scene, known for hosting live music events, dance parties, and karaoke nights. The venue has a capacity of 250 people, making it an intimate setting for music enthusiasts.
The club was co-founded by Bill Spieler, a DJ, along with Joe Englert and other industry professionals. Spieler’s wife, Amber Bursik, serves as the venue’s chef and assists in its operational management. In late 2006, Steve Lambert joined as the booker, and in 2007, Josh Copeland became the general manager. The venue occupies a two-story space that was previously home to Metro Cafe, and before that, Club Hollywood and Asylum.
DC9 is renowned for featuring indie rock bands, although it has recently expanded to include house music events. While not specifically a gay club, its diverse range of events attracts a wide audience. In 2010, an incident occurred where a man who threw a brick through the venue’s window died after being restrained by five employees. Initially charged with homicide, all charges were later dropped by the Metropolitan Police. In 2018, DC9 began hosting pop-up bars, further diversifying its offerings.
The venue features a narrow saloon bar with a digital jukebox on the ground floor and a spacious concert room upstairs. In 2010, a glass-enclosed rooftop bar was added, enhancing the venue’s appeal. DC9 enforces a no-phone policy at its DJ events, encouraging patrons to check in their phones with their coats to fully engage with the music experience.
DC9 temporarily ceased operations on March 16, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, complying with the D.C. suspension of on-site nightlife activities. The club gradually reopened, starting with take-out and outdoor dining as restrictions eased on June 22, 2020. In 2024, to mark its 20th anniversary, Bill Spieler organized a week-long series of four shows celebrating the venue’s history, showcasing past performers and highlighting current and future talent.
