Whisky a Go Go

History and Characteristics of Whisky a Go Go

The Whisky a Go Go, informally known as The Whisky, is a historic nightclub located in West Hollywood, California, United States. It opened on January 16, 1964, founded by Elmer Valentine, Phil Tanzini, Shelly Davis, and attorney Theodore Flier. The venue is situated at 8901 Sunset Boulevard on the Sunset Strip, a notable area for its vibrant nightlife and music scene. From the 1960s through the 1990s, The Whisky played a pivotal role in the Los Angeles music scene.

Originally billed as a discothèque, The Whisky offered more than just recorded music. It opened with a live band led by Johnny Rivers, while DJ Rhonda Lane spun records between sets from a suspended cage to the right of the stage. Shortly after its opening, the club began booking live rock bands, a move suggested by their publicist Ronnie Haran. This led to The Doors becoming the house band, performing seven nights a week. The club also popularized go-go dancing, with a glass-walled booth for the DJ high above the dance floor, a unique feature at the time.

Impact on the Music Scene

The Whisky a Go Go was instrumental in the careers of many bands, particularly those from Southern California. Regular performers included The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Smokestack Lightnin’, and Love, with The Doors serving as the house band for a period. In June 1966, Van Morrison’s band Them had a two-week residency, culminating in a jam session with The Doors on the song “Gloria.” The venue also played a role in the careers of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention, The Turtles, and Neil Diamond, among others.

In the mid-1970s, The Whisky hosted stage presentations, and in the early 1990s, it became a hub for Seattle-based musicians who were part of the grunge movement, including Soundgarden and Mudhoney. In 1994, Oasis performed a controversial set at the venue, with frontman Liam Gallagher visibly intoxicated, leading to a temporary departure of lead songwriter Noel Gallagher from the band.
