The George: A Cornerstone of Dublin’s LGBTQ Scene

The George, located on South Great George’s Street in the heart of Dublin, Ireland, stands as one of the country’s most iconic LGBTQ bars and nightclubs. Since its inception in 1985, The George has been a central figure in Dublin’s gay nightlife, offering a safe and welcoming space for the LGBTQ community long before homosexuality was legalized in Ireland in 1993. The venue’s historical significance and cultural impact make it a landmark in the city’s social landscape.

Originally a traditional pub, The George was transformed into a gay-owned establishment by Cyril O’Brien, who saw potential in the bar’s atmosphere but felt it needed a modern touch. In 1984, the upstairs area was converted into ‘The Loft,’ a gay disco bar, while the downstairs remained a straight venue. By May 1985, the downstairs area was also integrated into the gay scene, becoming known as ‘Bridie’s Bar,’ and the entire venue was collectively named The George. This transformation marked The George as one of the first bars in Dublin to openly cater to the gay community, alongside ‘The Viking’ on Dame Street.

The George quickly became a sanctuary where gay individuals could socialize without fear of prejudice, a rarity at the time. Following the decriminalization of homosexuality in 1993, the bar experienced a surge in popularity, reflecting the broader acceptance and growth of the gay scene in Dublin. In 1998, The George expanded into the adjacent building, which had previously housed an Indian restaurant, further solidifying its status as a prominent venue in the city.

Despite the diversification of Dublin’s gay scene in the 1990s, fueled by economic growth and liberalizing attitudes, The George has maintained its iconic status. It continues to be a central fixture of gay nightlife, even as newer venues like Pantibar and the now-closed The Dragon have emerged. The George’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to adapt and remain relevant, offering a variety of entertainment options that cater to a diverse audience.

The venue is divided into two main areas: ‘Bridie’s Bar,’ a quieter space favored by an older crowd, and a larger club venue that spans two floors. The club regularly hosts popular drag shows and personal appearances by both Irish and international acts. It is home to some of Ireland’s most renowned drag queens, including Shirley Temple Bar, Veda Beaux Reves, Davina Devine, Mizza, and Dolly Grip, as well as drag king Phil T. Gorgeous. The George offers a drag act nearly every night, with themed events such as “Win, Lose or Drag!” on Mondays and “Bingo with Shirley Temple Bar” on Sundays.

Throughout its history, The George has faced challenges, including a bomb scare during the Dublin LGBTQ Pride festival in June 2008, which turned out to be a hoax. Despite such incidents, the venue has continued to thrive, remaining a beloved institution within Dublin’s LGBTQ community. In May 2017, The George was vandalized with swastikas and homophobic slurs, a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the community. Nevertheless, The George’s resilience and commitment to providing a safe space for all continue to define its legacy.
